I have always been inspired by Abraham Lincoln because of his compassion, humility, and unshakable self-confidence. When our country was being torn apart and Americans were killing one another he remained compassionate, always thinking of the welfare of those who made great sacrifices to keep our country intact. In his Second Inaugural Address near the end of the War Lincoln focused on healing our country and caring for those who were impacted by the War. He could have sought to punish those who had started the War and aided its persecution but he instead worked to heal the country and the wounds that the War and slavery created.
Lincoln was a true public servant. He had a clear vision of the direction the country needed to go and stopped at nothing implimenting that vision. As illustrated in Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals he surrounded himself with the people he thought could help unite our country regardless of their political differences. Lincoln created a team of advisors who had more experience in Washington and as elected officials and did not let his own ego get in the way of doing the right thing.
